The Apathetics: Catch Up With Them, They Are Moving Quickly!

After their big hit show at Fitzy’s last Saturday, (March 28th), where they released their first album, Systematic Hypocrisy, they are on a roll for shows all over Central Ontario.  The Apathetics brought more then expected at Saturday’s show, provoking enthusiasm from their fans and rapidly adding to the base.  The energy circulating from there awaited performance at 12 am kept the party night going, many hoping it wouldn’t end.

As this band has been keeping it alive for five years now with their ska-punk sound, most avid music listeners can relate to the vibe and lyrical content The Apathetics throw the audience.  Maybe that style of music isn’t your thing?  I don’t think it matters, you may find yourself jiving to a new tune when you expose yourself to a show such as this.  Personally, I find it easier to absorb yourself in a new music style when they are underground musicians you can feel a connection to, because of their care-free attitudes.

Imagebee.netThe Apathetics headlining set was well complimented by the punk rock jams of Corporation and Ghetto Blasters; A perfect set of bands to anticipate the tracks from the new and first album Systematic Hypocrisy.  I see this musical compilation doing great things in the near future, but it looks like they have already begun!  With upcoming shows throughout our province, let’s hope they come your way.

I remember when I was younger, always looking for the all-ages music shows, and they were never hard to find.  My crew and I would always hear of one throughout our weeks of school, and if not you could always locate something going on, if you dig a little deeper.  These days it seems like all-ages shows are hard to come by, which is very unfortunate considering our youth culture feeds the flame to our underground music scene.  The reasons for this shortage of all ages events lie behind many factors I am sure, but I am hopeful we, as a community, will soon be able to bring it back!

Every once in a while, these shows do reign in and welcome the all-ages crowd, as they should more often.  On Sunday April 26th, you will find many musically-inclined people gathered for an event such as this.  At our Barrie Yuk Yuk’s Theater, a rather unusual venue, Shure and Supernova.com will be holding the Band on the Run 2009, a night sure to be filled with harmonizing musical variety.  The array of musical talent will be competing to win a 4 city tour!  Great opportunity!  City finals will be held at the Maclaren Arts Center soon after, so the anticipation will build.  Sounds of new style, riffs from an old rock touch, heavy sounds of classic metal, you will get a little bit of everything at this show.

I don’t know about you, but there is nothing I enjoy more then going to a show that holds heavy emphasis on VARIETY!  Not always so common, surprisingly!  Shows organized such as this, I feel, attract a much more diverse audience, which means, obviously, more people.  The point I am getting at is that with shows organized in this manner, with a wide selection of styles, the viewers can get in touch with sounds they may have never heard or never thought they would enjoy.  It opens our eyes and encourages us to be more open people, more open to the individuality.  It can be with music, food, art, whatever, we should all lead our lives with an open mind.  Why not start now if you haven’t already?

Just to give you guys an idea of what bands are gracing us with their musical presence, here is a list below.  Click the band and see what they are all about, or just join the party!  The show will be for all-ages, as said, but if you are 19+, don’t be discouraged.  Drinks will be available for your consumption, which I am sure those who are of age wanted to know!  It will be a good crowd of many ages, but we will all have one thing in common:  We love good music!  Check it out, tickets are $10 in advance @

A hidden hot spot in Barrie’s downtown spectrum, The Foxx Lounge is well known for the indisputable talented underground musicians every Friday night.  Some bands more widely known then others, all have a unique sound and style that most can relate to in some way or another.

One Star Studio, a recording studio based here in Barrie, is responsible for these eclectic musicians exposure at this retro-style lounge.  The owner and driving force for the studio, Shane Heath, keeps with ensuring an amazing show.  Always keeping a rainbow of colorful sounds projected throughout with the wide spread styles, this is what keeps the underground music scene alive, as far as I can see.  When I think seriously good local music, I think The Foxx Lounge.  As many have noticed, the availability for local shows has been slimming, but One Star Studio and The Foxx Lounge have kept the mainstream from conquering.

Typically, the style’s of music you will hear on Friday’s is a mix of metal-rock-indie bands from our area and beyond.  You will be able to find a complete review of upcoming talent’s brightening our Friday’s here, and those events in far advance will be reminded!  Soon enough there will be additional band profiles of all the local bands that visit our area, and it will expand from there…!  Check out the band listings for the upcoming 2 weeks!  Much more to come as time fly’s..

The arts community is coming together, encouraging all the rest, to join for a week of arts and new visions.  With the mass variety of video installations, assorted music, public opinion, theater and spreading awareness, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

File:The Earth seen from Apollo 17.jpgAs you may know, it is Earth Week and the shared goal of this time is to come together, share thoughts and ideas and tune in with mother nature.  A much needed reminder to all of us that we may be able to re-think our lifestyles slightly and help make a long term difference.

For those with opinions, this is a great opportunity to get your voice and ideas heard by simply participating in a cultured crowd with many views and means of expression.  People you meet could leave you with a lasting connection, with the endless similarities that prosper through minds alike.  Whether you have a passion for art, world issues, music…there is something for you here.

Throughout this week in downtown Barrie, be sure to keep your eye open for random video installations hammering a message of some sort, whether it be easily identified or not.  There will also be a hand-made book giveaway throughout the week, by donation.  If you want to find out more about the book giveaway, visit  http://ettground.org

Saving our precious, not to mention one of the cleanest, water in our area is a HUGE focus for our week of Earth Appreciation.  Many of you may have heard about the outrage provoked when ‘they’ wanted to build a dump site over our treasure, Site 41.  On March 22nd we will have guest speaker Rob DeLoe, Research Chair in Water Policy & Governance, at the Elmvale Community Hall, 2-4 pm, educating the public on water protection and importance.   On March 23rd the main focus will be on the issue of Dump Site 41.  Dr William Shotyk, advocate and founder of Elmvale Foundation, will be at Georgian College, 1 Georgian Drive, H Building, Rm 226 discussing an end to this ongoing debate, from 2-3 pm.  For more information on these subjects check out StopDumpSite41 and Elmvale Townships Web Page.

To carry on the intense water awareness focus, we will have the chance to see an internationally known documentary on all aspects of water resources.  You will be able to view this film at Monsoon Lounge, while also listening to the acoustic riffs of Troy Grimes, 9 pm.  On March 25, Shaun Hodgson and Bryce MacDonald will be reciting “Stream” and discussing water privatization in Bolivia.  This free seminar is also at Georgian College, 1 Georgian Drive, D Building, SDVA Gallery, 2-3:30 pm.

The Barrie Earth Hour Music Festival will liven the downtown streets on March 28th,  starting at 4:30 pm and running until 10:30pm.  The early hours of this event will be filled with vendors and booths educating the public on the cause.  Music can be anticipated around 6:30 pm, with contemporary country and rock talents like: Tal Bachman, David Usher, After Tuesday, Derek James Tilley, Stacy Jamieson, and Barrie’s own, Final Thought.  When the clock hits 8:30 pm, all lights will go out in support of Earth hour, the national concept that our personal responsibility for our earth combined, globally, can make a drastic change.  Acoustic performances from various performers will be graced upon us during this impacting hour.   All necessary electricity is environmentally friendly, using BullFrog Power and LED lighting.  Festivities will end with David Usher performing a powerful closing set, something those amongst the audience will surely remember.

Earth, humanity, we are all in the act of life together, so let’s look out for one another.  Just the act of educating yourself on the issues affecting our daily lives is an act towards the bright future we hope to expose.  Events such as these are meaningful experiences that leave you with new friends, broader perspectives and new found appreciation.  Come join the music, the knowledge and the movement!

As our local bands progress independently into future stardom and recognition, what can we, as the general public, do?  Go to events such as this and support the talent, listen to a song, sing along, and have a great time!  It is events and attitudes like this that encourage those creative to put their thoughts out there and have them appreciated and exposed.

The Apathetics, a band with old school punk inspiration combined with catchy ska sound , is throwing a no-cover CD launch party for their long-awaited, first released CD, Systematic Hyprocrisy.  The bands Corporation and Ghetto Blasters will also be joining The Apathetics on their night of awaited musical release!   This night of mixed personalities and music will be held on March 28 at Fitzy’s Bar & Grill (147 Dunlop St E), open at 8 pm.  The Apathetics will have CD’s for sale for $5, great price for the audio you will receive!  This team of musical talents consists of three members: Greg Stafford, Cody Pelka and  Curtis Lamain.  Together they jam up a storm in a hella mixture of loud outbursts and  rhythmic harmony.  As with so many other great local bands, this group has had a long-lasting friendship and connection which allows music making to be that much more meaningful and effective!

Pure Magic By Robbin Wenzoski

Wood carvers from all over are coming together in London, Ontario on the weekend  March of 28-29th, 2009.  The event will be scattered with different people, different visions and a lot of logs!  The event is being held by Robbin Wenzoski at his studio in Brookesdale, 20 minutes West of London, 8am-4pm each day.  For directions to this destination, click here.  These are directions from Hwy 400 S, Barrie, ON, so if you are coming from somewhere else then you can adjust it.

Robbin Wenzoski has been a professional carver for four years now, and teaches privately as well as an introductory Chainsaw Sculpture course at the Haliburton School of the Arts every year.

This is the inaugural Carv-a-palooza to be held at Robbin’s location, and if you participate in the art of carving then it will be a great experience both personally and professionally.  The goal of this event is to provide a chance for carver’s from all directions to come together and carve, teach, network and have a great time!

This event has almost no cost, aside from food you may want to bring, all that is asked is that the carver’s donate $100 or a carving to cover costs and allow this event to go on in 2010!  Any extra money goes to next year’s event.   Come on out and carve or come watch, Barrie’s Jeff Taylor will be there, in action!

There has been lot’s of exciting things happening in the PAM office this past month. We’ve been still working on some big features for the website, which are coming out very soon, and as many may see already, our BLOG is skinned to suit our website. There also has been some new widgets added to our BLOG and a video clip to the right just for fun.

We have another special announcement to make. We’ve just added a new member to our team, “Pam Girl” aka Brandie Blackler from ArtisticTendencs.com.  Brandie or ‘Pam’ will be canvasing the streets of the nightlife in Barrie to find the hottest and latest upcoming events, parties and hot spots to keep you connected with our community.

She has been writing her own articles on her website for the past while and we’re honored to have her here on our team.

What we all can expect from our BLOG articles here are a lot more local coverage on events, whether big or small, profiles on bands, clubs and bars, and any new or upcoming hotspot. We plan to offer this content more frequently on a daily to weekly basis and hope everyone enjoys!

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner some may ask themselves what exactly is St Patrick’s Day or what to do on this holiday?

St. Patrick’s Day is the national holiday of the Irish, typically a celebration of the Irish patron named “Saint Patrick”, and is an annual festival to get together with friends & family to feast on Irish foods and indulge in Irish beverages such as Guinness Beer or Baileys. Usually this day is celebrated on March 17th and millions of people across the world participate in marches, special events and parties.

As many know and see, the day of St. Patrick’s is associated with the colour green but that hasn’t always been true. In the times of St. Patrick, he was a man recognized from the colour blue by the Irish people. The saying “wearing of green” which meant wearing a shamrock on your clothing, was a symbol of Irish nationalism to the faith of Roman Catholic. This is more than likely why green to this day is more prominent and used as the colour of St Patrick’s Day.

In Canada specifically the day is brought out by people partying and going to the bars and drinking Green Beer, which is beer with food colouring in it. If you’re planning to go out for a night on the town it’s recommended to show up early so you can be sure to get in. The bars are literally jam packed with people on this day of celebration and the lineups to get in can sometimes take hours.

From 1919 to 1927 the Toronto Maple Leafs used to be known as the Toronto St. Patrick’s, and wore green jerseys. Of course the name soon changed to the Toronto Maple Leafs. However on March 17th, 1999 they supported the day by wearing green St. Patty’s jerseys while playing an NHL game aired on Hockey Night in Canada.

The holiday of St. Patrick’s Day is full of events and parties for people to remember and celebrate their Irish heritage, even if they’re not Irish. So get out there on March 17th and drink a green beer for Saint Patrick!
